# What are query fan-outs in AI search monitoring?

> Understand related searches and expanded questions captured alongside monitored prompts, and use them to improve topic coverage.

Query fan-outs are related or expanded queries recorded alongside a monitored question. They help you investigate adjacent topics and the ways a broad question can branch into more specific research.

The public API distinguishes related searches, People Also Ask questions, and AI Overview-related entries. Each record retains the source query and expanded query so you can trace the relationship.

## Use them to find coverage gaps

Review expansions associated with a relevant prompt. Look for recurring customer requirements, comparisons, locations, or product attributes that your current monitoring set does not cover.

For example, a general question about accounting software might produce related questions about payroll, multi-currency reporting, or agency billing. These are illustrative topics, not findings about your workspace.

Create a separate prompt when a related question represents a meaningful research need. Keep broad category discovery and detailed feature research in different [groups](/docs/workspace/groups-and-personas).

## Interpret the evidence carefully

Recorded expansions are observations from the available search data. They do not expose an AI platform's complete internal reasoning or every query it may have issued. Use them as research evidence alongside the [answer](/docs/analysis/answer-history) and its [citations](/docs/analysis/source-citations).

Developers can retrieve these records through the public query-fanouts endpoint and use them alongside [prompt and answer exports](/docs/developers/export-answers).
