# What is the difference between AI visibility and share of voice?

> Understand brand presence, ranking, and competitive share of voice in a monitored set of AI answers.

AI visibility describes how your brand appears in monitored answers. Share of voice puts brand presence into a competitive context. Use them together, but keep the metric's denominator and the selected answer set in view.

## Distinguish presence from ranking

**Brand presence** asks whether your brand appears in an answer. A presence rate is the proportion of eligible answers containing the brand. **Rank** describes position in an ordered recommendation where a ranking is available. An answer can mention a brand without making a ranked recommendation.

For an illustrative example, if a brand appears in 12 of 20 eligible answers, its presence rate is 60%. This says nothing by itself about whether those mentions are positive, whether the brand ranks first, or whether the answer links to the brand's website.

## Use share of voice for competitive context

Compare your brand with the competitors identified in the same monitoring set. Read the chart or table's definition before comparing percentages: a share of all brand mentions and a percentage of answers containing a brand answer different questions.

Do not add individual presence rates and expect them to total 100%. One answer can mention several brands. Likewise, do not substitute average rank for visibility; a brand can rank well in a small number of answers and be absent from most others.

## Make changes interpretable

Keep the prompts, platforms, regions, and date windows comparable. Review coverage when a metric moves sharply. Then open [answer history](/docs/analysis/answer-history) to understand the wording, [competitors](/docs/analysis/competitors) to check brand matching, and [sentiment](/docs/analysis/sentiment) to assess how each brand is described.
